Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who can benefit from counselling?

Counselling can benefit adults, adolescents, and learners who are experiencing emotional distress, stress, anxiety, low mood, life transitions, or who wish to develop greater self-awareness and coping skills.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is a core ethical principle in counselling. Information shared in sessions is kept private, except in situations where there is a legal or ethical duty to disclose (for example, risk of harm to yourself or others).

What is an HPCSA Registered Counsellor?

A Registered Counsellor is a mental health professional registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Registered Counsellors are trained to provide preventative, short-term, and supportive counselling services within a defined scope of practice.

Registered Counsellor vs Psychologist – what is the difference?

Registered Counsellors focus on short-term, preventative, and supportive interventions, psychoeducation, and certain psychometric assessments. Psychologists typically provide longer-term psychotherapy, diagnosis, and a wider range of psychological assessments. Both play important and complementary roles in mental health care.
